An ActionScript developer as a Cocoa developer

November 19, 2010 | One Comment | Tags: Cocoa, Mac Development, XCode

As I mentioned before I am an ActionScript developer for more than 7 years. A few weeks ago, when I wanted to start my new AIR application I had some difficulties to design its UI for both Mac and Windows. So I decided to skip Windows and develop it for Mac only. Suddenly, I think about XCode and Cocoa and after some investigations I strongly decided to learn developing originally for Mac.
I surfed on the Internet and found some useful sources that learn Cocoa form basic levels. Cocoa Dev Central is really good one. But the problem is Objective-C itself. It is very strange for me because its syntax is totally different from what I knew and expected. The ways of defining variables, calling methods, creating classes and making new instance of a class are very different from other languages.
First of all, I got confused but after spending a lot of time I could understand and wrote my first “Hello Word” sample! Despite of this fact that my learning is not completed yet, I have learned new topics such as Memory Management. It is very challenging and I like to be involved with this sort of problems!
There are some new things that I think I know the concept and use in AS but in Cocoa the way of usage is different. Protocol, Category and Dynamic Messaging are example of those concepts.
I hope to finish learning Cocoa and start using it. I am very excited … ;)
